Charles Peter Mallett (1792-1873) was a Fayetteville, NC, merchant who owned several businesses, including coal mines and iron works, a stagecoach line, and a cotton mill. In 1856 he moved to Chapel Hill to open a book and stationery store across from the University campus. Twice married, Mallett had six children with Sophia Sarah Beatty (1796-1829) and four with Sarah Green (d. 1884), whom he married in 1839. His correspondence with his son Charles Beatty Mallett (1816-72) remains an important eyewitness account of the occupation of Chapel Hill by Federal troops from April 16 to May 2, 1865. After the war Mallett went to Louisiana to help his sons reestablish themselves in business (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 4:204-05).
